H-4 Visa Application Steps
Complete the DS-160 Form
Fill out the online DS-160 visa application form, providing all required personal information and details about your relationship to the H-1B visa holder.
Pay Fees and Schedule Interview
Pay the visa application fee at the U.S. embassy or consulate where you will apply, then schedule your visa interview appointment.
Prepare Documents
Gather a valid passport, DS-160 confirmation page, visa fee receipt, marriage certificate (if applicable), proof of relationship to the H-1B holder, and any other supporting documents required by the consulate.
Interview, Approval, and Beyond
Attend the visa interview on the scheduled date. Be prepared to answer questions about your relationship to the H-1B visa holder and your intention to stay temporarily in the United States.
If approved, your passport is returned with the H-4 visa affixed. The H-4 visa is typically granted for the same duration as the H-1B holder's status and can be extended as long as the primary holder maintains status.

Work Authorization and Study
A 2015 rule change allows certain H-4 visa holders to obtain employment authorization when their H-1B spouse is in the process of applying for a Green Card or has extended H-1B status beyond the initial six-year limit.
